The 10 sample cards as a list
  1. A startup cannot predict whether it will need ten servers or a thousand next year. Which cloud benefit removes the need to forecast this up front?
Stop guessing capacity — you provision what you need now and add or remove resources as real demand appears, instead of buying hardware for a guessed peak.

  2. Why can a large cloud provider offer lower per-unit prices than a company running its own small datacenter?
Economies of scale — the provider aggregates usage from a huge number of customers, so it buys hardware, power and networking far more cheaply and passes part of the saving on.
Cloud Concepts › Benefits of the Cloud
  3. A retailer wants its storefront running for customers in Europe and Asia by the end of the week, with no new buildings or hardware. Which cloud benefit is this?
Go global in minutes — you deploy into existing AWS Regions around the world with a few clicks or an API call, putting the application close to users.
Cloud Concepts › Benefits of the Cloud
  4. What is the difference between scalability and elasticity?
Scalability is the ability to grow (or shrink) to handle a larger or smaller load; elasticity is doing that automatically and quickly so resources track demand moment to moment.

Example: an Auto Scaling group that adds instances at noon and removes them at night is elastic.
Cloud Concepts › Benefits of the Cloud
  5. A team can try a new idea on fresh servers within minutes and throw them away if it fails. Which cloud benefit does this describe?
Speed and agility — resources are available on demand in minutes, so the cost and delay of experimenting drop sharply.
Cloud Concepts › Benefits of the Cloud
  6. In the AWS shared responsibility model, what is the one-line split between AWS and the customer?
AWS is responsible for security of the cloud (hardware, facilities, global network, virtualization); the customer is responsible for security in the cloud (data, identities, configuration).
Security and Compliance › Shared Responsibility
  7. A flaw is announced in the hypervisor software that runs underneath EC2 instances. Who must patch it?
AWS — the virtualization layer is part of the infrastructure AWS operates.
Security and Compliance › Shared Responsibility
  8. Who is responsible for configuring the security group rules that control traffic to an EC2 instance?
The customer — firewall settings such as security groups and network ACLs are customer configuration.
Security and Compliance › Shared Responsibility
  9. For an AWS Lambda function, which security tasks remain with the customer?
The function code, its IAM permissions, and the data it handles. AWS manages the servers, operating system and runtime patching.
Security and Compliance › Shared Responsibility
  10. Who is responsible for the physical security of AWS datacenters and for securely destroying old storage devices?
AWS — physical access control and media decommissioning are part of security of the cloud.
Security and Compliance › Shared Responsibility
