A Cisco design shows both Layer 2 access switches and a Layer 3 distribution switch. What can the Layer 3 switch do that the access switches cannot?A Layer 3 (multilayer) switch keeps a routing table and routes between VLANs in hardware, using SVIs or routed ports.Network Fundamentals › Components and Topologies
A Layer 2 switch only forwards frames inside a VLAN by MAC address.
Watch out: a Layer 2 switch can still have an IP address on an SVI, but only for management. -
What does a next-generation firewall add on top of a classic stateful firewall?Application awareness — it identifies applications regardless of port, and typically adds an integrated IPS, URL filtering, malware inspection and identity-based rules, rather than deciding only on addresses, ports and connection state.Network Fundamentals › Components and Topologies
-
A small campus merges its distribution and core layers into one pair of switches. What is this design called, and why choose it?A two-tier (collapsed core) design.Network Fundamentals › Components and Topologies
It saves the cost and cabling of a separate core when there are only a few distribution blocks; a three-tier design is added once the campus grows enough that a dedicated core simplifies the full-mesh of distribution links. -
Two Catalyst switches are joined with a straight-through cable and the link still comes up. Which feature made that work, and which interface command controls it?Auto-MDIX detects the wrong pinout and swaps the transmit and receive pairs internally. It is set per interface withNetwork Fundamentals › Interfaces and Cabling
mdix autoand normally needs speed and duplex left on auto.
Why: without it, like devices (switch to switch) need a crossover cable. -
A Catalyst port on a 100 Mbps link has autonegotiation on, but the other end is hard-coded to 100/full and negotiation is disabled. What does the Catalyst end choose, and what follows? It senses 100 Mbps from the signal but, getting no negotiation, falls back to half duplex (the IEEE default at 10 and 100 Mbps; 1 Gbps and faster fall back to full). The result is a duplex mismatch: late collisions on the half-duplex side and errors and poor throughput on the full-duplex side.Network Fundamentals › Interfaces and Cabling
-
On a Catalyst switch fresh out of the box, which VLAN are all ports in, and can that VLAN be removed?VLAN 1, the default VLAN. It cannot be deleted or renamed; best practice is to move user ports and management traffic to other VLANs instead.Network Access › VLANs and Inter-VLAN Routing
-
Which VLAN IDs are normal range and which are extended range on Catalyst switches?Normal range is 1–1005 (1002–1005 are reserved for legacy Token Ring and FDDI). Extended range is 1006–4094. VLAN 0 and 4095 are reserved.Network Access › VLANs and Inter-VLAN Routing
-
Which commands create VLAN 20 and name it Sales?Network Access › VLANs and Inter-VLAN Routing
vlan 20in global configuration, thenname Salesin VLAN configuration mode. -
Which two interface commands make a port a static access port in VLAN 20?Network Access › VLANs and Inter-VLAN Routing
switchport mode accessandswitchport access vlan 20.
Setting the mode explicitly stops the port from negotiating a trunk with DTP. -
A desk has an IP phone with a PC plugged into it, both on one switch port. Which command puts the phone traffic in VLAN 110?Network Access › VLANs and Inter-VLAN Routing
switchport voice vlan 110, alongsideswitchport access vlanfor the PC's data VLAN.
The phone tags its own frames for VLAN 110 (learning the VLAN via CDP or LLDP), while the PC's frames stay untagged.
