The 10 sample cards as a list
  1. What does 我不比你高 mean, and how is it different from 我没有你高?
    A 不比 B + adjective = A is no more … than B

It pushes back on a claim and suggests the two are about the same; 没有…那么 says A falls short of B.

坐地铁不比打车慢。 (Zuò dìtiě bù bǐ dǎchē màn.) — Taking the subway is no slower than taking a taxi.

Note: 我没有你高 — I'm not as tall as you (you are taller).
    Comparisons
  2. How do you ask or say 'as … as' with 有?
    A + 有 + B + (这么 / 那么) + adjective

The positive and question partner of 没有…那么: does A reach B's level?

你弟弟有你这么高吗? (Nǐ dìdi yǒu nǐ zhème gāo ma?) — Is your younger brother as tall as you?
    Comparisons
  3. How do you say 'even' with 连…都 / 也?
    连 + the extreme case + 都 / 也 + verb

Picks the least (or most) likely case to show how far something goes.

我们连一分钟都没休息。 (Wǒmen lián yī fēnzhōng dōu méi xiūxi.) — We didn't rest for even a minute.

Note: 连 can also mark the subject: 连奶奶都会用手机 — even Grandma can use a mobile phone.
    Linking Pairs
  4. What does 连看都没看 mean, and how is the pattern built?
    连 + verb + 都 / 也 + 没 / 不 + the same verb

Repeating the verb says someone didn't do even the most basic thing.

她连试都没试就买了那双鞋。 (Tā lián shì dōu méi shì jiù mǎile nà shuāng xié.) — She bought those shoes without even trying them on.
    Linking Pairs
  5. What does 好 add as a result complement, as in 收拾好了?
    Verb + 好 = done properly; ready

The action is finished and the result is satisfactory or ready to use.

行李都收拾好了吗? (Xíngli dōu shōushi hǎo le ma?) — Is all the luggage packed?

Note: 说好了 — it's agreed; 坐好 — sit properly.
    Complements
  6. What does 住 add after verbs like 记 or 站?
Verb + 住 = held firmly in place

The result holds fast and doesn't slip away.

请记住我的电话号码。 (Qǐng jìzhù wǒ de diànhuà hàomǎ.) — Please memorise my phone number.

Note: 站住! — stop right there!
    Complements
  7. With 把, how do you say where something ends up — moved to, put in?
    Subject + 把 + object + verb + 在 / 到 + place

When a specific object ends up somewhere, Chinese normally uses 把 so that 在 or 到 can follow the verb directly.

我们把沙发搬到客厅去吧。 (Wǒmen bǎ shāfā bāndào kètīng qù ba.) — Let's move the sofa into the living room.

Watch out: The object can't sit between the verb and 在, and before 到 it usually sounds clumsy (搬沙发到客厅); a few verbs such as 送 allow it: 送你到机场.
    Special Constructions
  8. How does 把 combine with 成 and 给 — turn something into, hand something to?
    把 + object + verb + 成 + result · 把 + object + verb + 给 + person

成 says what the object becomes; 给 says who receives it.

我想把这张床换成大一点儿的。 (Wǒ xiǎng bǎ zhè zhāng chuáng huànchéng dà yīdiǎnr de.) — I'd like to swap this bed for a bigger one.

Note: 我把照片发给你 — I'll send you the photos.
    Special Constructions
  9. How does 难道…吗 turn a question into a challenge?
    难道 + statement + 吗?

A rhetorical question: the speaker already knows the answer.

难道你没看见门口的牌子吗? (Nándào nǐ méi kànjiàn ménkǒu de páizi ma?) — Don't tell me you didn't see the sign at the door!

Note: A negative 难道 question means 'surely you do'; a positive one means 'surely not'.
    Emphasis & Rhetorical Questions
  10. 她七点就到公司了 vs 我九点才到: what do 就 and 才 say about timing?
就 = earlier or sooner than expected · 才 = later than expected

The time word goes before the adverb, and 才 sentences usually drop 了.

她七点就到公司了,我九点才到。 (Tā qī diǎn jiù dào gōngsī le, wǒ jiǔ diǎn cái dào.) — She was at the office by seven; I didn't get there till nine.

About these cards

Review status: Second-reader reviewed, with corrections applied.

Checked against:

  • Pinyin, tones, measure words and meanings checked against CC-CEDICT (CC BY-SA 4.0) and the Taiwan Ministry of Education's dictionaries (the Revised Mandarin Chinese Dictionary and the Cross-Strait Dictionary 兩岸常用詞典, via moedict.tw) (reference only). Grammar rules checked against the University of Oxford CTCFL grammar pages, the grammar list in GF 0025-2021 (附录A) and published papers on 比 negatives, the 被 passive and degree complements (reference only; no text copied). Levels follow HSK 3.0: the HSK examination syllabus (HSK 考试大纲) published by the Center for Language Education and Cooperation in November 2025, a separate document from the 2021 standard GF 0025-2021, which it cites among its references. The patterns are those commonly taught at this level, and the examples use the folder's vocabulary. Against the syllabus's grammar list (语法大纲), 51 of the 60 patterns are listed: 17 at level 4, 32 at levels 2–3 and 2 at level 5 (再…也 and 得 + a clause); 9 are not itemised (差不多 comparisons, the result complements 掉, 成, 着 and 光, where an object goes in 起…来, where negatives and modals go in 把 and 被 sentences, and 以为 against 认为). Where a pattern is already carded in the HSK 1–3 or AP Chinese decks (for example 一…就, 又…又, 还是, comparisons with 比, 有 and 没有, 把 and 被, directional and potential complements, 得, 无论…都), the card here adds a further use or a contrast. All example sentences are original.
