  1. A cocoa processor's annual report sets out its profit, its carbon emissions and the incomes of the farming communities it buys from. Which approach is the firm using to report its performance?

    A) A SWOT analysis of its internal and external position
    B) A force field analysis of the forces for change
    C) The triple bottom line of people, planet and profit
    D) A STEEPLE analysis of its external environment
    C) The triple bottom line of people, planet and profit

The triple bottom line measures social (people) and environmental (planet) performance alongside financial results (profit). STEEPLE scans external factors for planning; it is not a way of reporting the firm's own results.

  2. A laboratory carries out research on new battery materials and sells its findings to car manufacturers. In which sector of economic activity does it mainly operate?

    A) Secondary sector
    B) Quaternary sector
    C) Tertiary sector
    D) Primary sector
    B) Quaternary sector

The quaternary sector is knowledge-based, covering research and development and IT consulting. The car makers that use the findings to build vehicles operate in the secondary sector.

  3. A firm employed 230 staff at the start of the year and 250 at the end. During the year, 18 employees left. Using the average number employed, what was its labour turnover?

    A) 3.75%
    B) 7.83%
    C) 7.2%
    D) 7.5%
    D) 7.5%

    Average employed = (230 + 250) ÷ 2 = 240, so turnover = 18 ÷ 240 × 100 = 7.5%. Dividing by the opening figure of 230 gives 7.83%, which ignores the instruction to use the average.

  4. Which firm is the clearest example of market orientation?

    A) A phone maker that builds the most advanced camera, then finds buyers
    B) A car maker that raises output of its best-engineered model
    C) A snack maker that surveys buyers before designing a flavour
    D) A furniture maker that sells whichever designs its craftspeople prefer
    C) A snack maker that surveys buyers before designing a flavour

A market-oriented firm researches customer needs first and designs products to meet them. Building the most advanced product and then looking for buyers is product orientation.
Marketing › Planning Research and the Seven Ps
  5. A product sells for 25 per unit, its variable cost is 15 per unit and fixed costs are 60,000. What is the break-even quantity?

    A) 6,000 units
    B) 1,500 units
    C) 2,400 units
    D) 4,000 units
    A) 6,000 units

    Contribution per unit = 25 − 15 = 10, so break-even = 60,000 ÷ 10 = 6,000 units. Dividing fixed costs by the price (2,400) ignores the variable cost of each unit.
Operations Management › Production Methods and Break-even
  6. A small hotel is preparing a SWOT analysis. Where should it place the news that a new airport will open nearby, bringing more tourists to the area?

    A) Opportunities
    B) Strengths
    C) Threats
    D) Weaknesses
    A) Opportunities

The airport is an external factor that could benefit the hotel, so it is an opportunity. Strengths and weaknesses are internal to the business.
