The 10 sample cards as a list
  1. What makes a commercial policy a package policy rather than a monoline policy?
It combines two or more coverage parts, such as commercial property and general liability, in one policy.

Why: a monoline policy has a single coverage part, and packaging usually earns a premium discount.
Commercial Property › Package Policy & Common Conditions
  2. Which pieces make up an ISO commercial package policy?
Common policy declarations, common policy conditions and two or more coverage parts, often with interline endorsements.

Why: each coverage part brings its own declarations, conditions and coverage forms, and a property part adds a causes-of-loss form.
Commercial Property › Package Policy & Common Conditions
  3. What does business income coverage pay after a covered fire closes a store?
The net income the business would have earned plus its continuing normal operating expenses, including payroll, during the period of restoration.

Why: it puts the business where it would have been had the loss not happened.
    Business Income
  4. A shop loses sales because a nearby road is closed for repairs, though nothing on its premises is damaged. Does business income coverage pay?
No: it requires direct physical loss or damage to property at the described premises from a covered cause of loss.

Why: provisions such as civil authority and dependent properties reach beyond the premises only in narrow situations.
    Business Income
  5. What does a businessowners policy (BOP) combine?
Property and general liability coverage for small and mid-sized businesses in one pre-packaged policy.

Why: it trades flexibility for simplicity and usually a lower premium than buying the coverages separately.
    Businessowners Policy
  6. Which businesses are eligible for a businessowners policy?
Small to mid-sized, lower-hazard businesses that meet the insurer's size and class rules, such as offices, shops and apartment buildings.

Why: larger or more hazardous operations are written on a commercial package policy instead.
    Businessowners Policy
  7. What does the Nationwide Marine Definition do?
It sets out which risks may be written as marine insurance, a definition developed through the NAIC.

Why: it covers goods in transit, instrumentalities of transportation and communication, and floater risks that move from place to place.
Inland & Ocean Marine › Inland Marine
  8. Bridges, tunnels and radio towers never move. Why can they still be insured under inland marine?
They are instrumentalities of transportation and communication under the Nationwide Marine Definition.

Why: inland marine grew out of transportation insurance, and these structures support transport and communication.
Inland & Ocean Marine › Inland Marine
  9. A thief threatens a cashier with a knife and takes the cash drawer. Under commercial crime definitions, is that robbery, burglary or theft?
    Robbery.

Why: robbery means taking property from someone in charge of it by harming or threatening that person, or by a plainly unlawful act done in their sight; safe burglary needs forced-entry marks on a locked safe or vault (or removal of the whole safe), and theft is any unlawful taking.
Crime & Equipment Breakdown › Crime
  10. Stock disappears from a warehouse with no sign of a break-in. Why can't the owner claim it as a burglary?
No forced entry: the ISO crime form's burglary cover, "safe burglary", needs forced-entry marks on a locked safe or vault, or removal of the whole safe.

Watch out: its employee-theft cover also excludes losses proven only by an inventory or profit-and-loss computation.
Crime & Equipment Breakdown › Crime
