In cash — the writer pays the difference between the index's settlement value and the strike, times the multiplier (100); no securities change hands.
    Index Options
  9. What is the difference between American-style and European-style options?
American-style options may be exercised any time up to expiration; European-style only at expiration. Listed equity options are American-style.
