The 6 sample questions as a list
  1. When the lights went out in the middle of her talk, Odile Varga had no time to plan a word, yet she guided two hundred visitors out through the dark in a ______ voice, slow and even, as if announcing lunch.

    A) rash
    B) considered
    C) evasive
    D) measured
    D) measured

A voice held slow and even by choice, with no trace of panic in the dark, is measured. Considered is tempting, but a considered reply is weighed and worked out beforehand, and she had no time to plan a word.
    Judgment & Prudence
  2. After two contractors misread the old safety brief, Joaquim rewrote it so that nothing had to be read between the lines: every hazard, exit and banned tool is now ______.

    A) nebulous
    B) explicit
    C) definitive
    D) implicit
    B) explicit

Nothing left to read between the lines means each point is put into words: explicit. Definitive is tempting, but a definitive version closes the question for good, and the rewrite was about stating the hazards clearly.
    Precision & Nuance
  3. Kessling's lawyers argued the hidden lawsuit was ______: had they known of it before signing, they would have offered forty million dollars less for the company.

    A) salient
    B) fungible
    C) material
    D) ancillary
    C) material

A fact big enough to change the price by forty million dollars is material. Salient is tempting, but salient means standing out and noticeable, and this lawsuit was hidden; it mattered without being noticed.
    Scale & Consequence
  4. Demand for the Kestle drone has been ______: a viral video tripled orders one week and a rival's launch halved them the next, swings nobody predicted but everyone could explain afterward.

    A) stagnant
    B) volatile
    C) incremental
    D) precipitous
    B) volatile

Orders that triple and halve within weeks, without warning, are volatile. Precipitous is tempting, since each swing was sudden and steep, but precipitous describes a steep drop or climb, not demand that swings both ways.
    Change & Trajectory
  5. Brannock Insurance's claims rules are short and simple, but the company refuses to publish them, so its decisions are ______: customers who are turned down never learn why.

    A) opaque
    B) ambiguous
    C) convoluted
    D) haphazard
    A) opaque

Decisions made under hidden rules cannot be seen into: they are opaque. Convoluted is tempting, since both make things hard to follow, but convoluted means overly complicated, and these rules are short and simple.
    Vagueness & Weak Thinking
  6. The board told Adaeze, the new head of the Nairobi office, that she had considerable ______ to rework the product line as she saw fit, though not one spare day or dollar: the launch date and budget were fixed.

    A) ambit
    B) acumen
    C) latitude
    D) foresight
    C) latitude

Room the board allows her for making her own choices is latitude. Foresight is tempting, since a fixed launch date and budget call for planning ahead, but foresight is a knack for seeing early where things are heading, and what the board gave her was freedom to decide.
    Scope & Restraint
