Complétez : « Pardon, madame, vous ___ où est la gare ? »
A) savez
B) voulez
C) connaissez
D) pouvezA) savezEssential verbs
Savoir introduces a clause such as où est la gare: Vous savez où est la gare ? = Do you know where the station is? Connaître takes only a noun (a person, a place or a thing), never a clause, as in Vous connaissez la gare ? -
Il est neuf heures du matin. Vous entrez dans une boulangerie que vous ne connaissez pas. Que dites-vous d'abord ?
A) Bonsoir, madame.
B) Salut !
C) Bonjour, madame.
D) Au revoir, madame.C) Bonjour, madame.Greetings & courtesy
Bonjour, madame = Hello, ma'am: in a French store you greet the staff with Bonjour during the day. Bonsoir is for the evening, and Salut is informal, for people you know well. -
Complétez : « Je te présente ___ amie Chloé : nous travaillons ensemble. »
A) ma
B) sa
C) mon
D) mesC) monPossessives
Before a feminine noun starting with a vowel or silent h, ma becomes mon so two vowels don't clash: mon amie Chloé = my friend Chloé. Ma amie and sa amie are never correct, and mes is plural. -
Complétez : « Si tu ___ le temps samedi, on ira au marché ensemble. »
A) as
B) avais
C) auras
D) auraisA) asFuture
After si (if), French uses the present, with the future in the other clause: Si tu as le temps, on ira au marché = If you have time, we'll go to the market. The future never follows si meaning if (a condition), and avais would need on irait. -
Complétez : « La plage ___ nous avons pique-niqué était pleine de méduses. »
A) où
B) quand
C) que
D) quiA) oùRelative pronouns
Où refers to a place in a relative clause: la plage où nous avons pique-niqué = the beach where we had our picnic. Que would need a direct object and qui a missing subject, and French never uses quand as a relative here. -
Complétez : « Pour le parking, il faut des pièces, mais je n'ai pas ___ : j'ai seulement un billet de vingt euros. »
A) de prix
B) de caisse
C) d'argent
D) de monnaieD) de monnaieShopping & money
La monnaie = change, coins: je n'ai pas de monnaie = I don't have any change. Pas d'argent (no money at all) contradicts the twenty-euro bill the speaker has.
