The 6 sample questions as a list
  1. Which species contains 16 protons, 16 neutrons and 18 electrons?

    A) ³⁴Cl⁻
    B) ³⁴S²⁻
    C) ³²S²⁺
    D) ³²S²⁻
    D) ³²S²⁻

Sulfur has atomic number 16; mass number 32 gives 32 − 16 = 16 neutrons, and the 2− charge adds two electrons to make 18. ³⁴S²⁻ has 18 neutrons, and a 2+ ion would have only 14 electrons.
Particulate Nature of Matter › Nuclear Atom
  2. Which compound has the largest lattice enthalpy?

    A) Potassium chloride, KCl
    B) Magnesium oxide, MgO
    C) Sodium fluoride, NaF
    D) Calcium oxide, CaO
    B) Magnesium oxide, MgO

Lattice enthalpy is largest for high ionic charges and small ionic radii. MgO and CaO both have 2+ and 2− ions, but Mg²⁺ is smaller than Ca²⁺, so the attraction in MgO is stronger.
Bonding and Structure › Ionic Model
  3. Which period 3 oxide dissolves in water to form an alkaline solution?

    A) Al₂O₃
    B) P₄O₁₀
    C) SO₂
    D) Na₂O
    D) Na₂O

Sodium oxide is a basic oxide: Na₂O + H₂O → 2 NaOH. Aluminium oxide is amphoteric and insoluble in water, while the oxides of phosphorus and sulfur are acidic and form acidic solutions.
Classification of Matter › Periodic Table
  4. Burning 0.0100 mol of a fuel raises the temperature of 200 g of water (c = 4.18 J g⁻¹ K⁻¹) by 15.0 K. Which expression gives the enthalpy change of combustion, in kJ mol⁻¹?

    A) +(200 × 4.18 × 15.0) ÷ (1000 × 0.0100)
    B) −(200 × 4.18 × 15.0) ÷ (1000 × 0.0100)
    C) −(200 × 4.18 × 288) ÷ (1000 × 0.0100)
    D) −(200 × 4.18 × 15.0) ÷ 0.0100
    B) −(200 × 4.18 × 15.0) ÷ (1000 × 0.0100)

Q = mcΔT gives joules, so divide by 1000 for kJ and by the amount of fuel for per mole; the sign is negative because combustion is exothermic. ΔT is a temperature change, so 15.0 K is used, not 288.

  5. 2.0 mol of hydrogen reacts with 2.0 mol of oxygen: 2 H₂(g) + O₂(g) → 2 H₂O(l). Taking M(H₂O) as 18.0 g mol⁻¹, what is the maximum mass of water that can form?

    A) 36.0 g
    B) 54.0 g
    C) 18.0 g
    D) 72.0 g
    A) 36.0 g

2.0 mol of H₂ needs only 1.0 mol of O₂, so hydrogen is limiting and gives 2.0 mol of water: 2.0 × 18.0 = 36.0 g. Treating oxygen as limiting gives 4.0 mol of water, or 72.0 g, which is impossible.
How Much How Fast How Far › Amount of Change
  6. In the reaction HCO₃⁻ + H₂O ⇌ CO₃²⁻ + H₃O⁺, which pair is a conjugate acid–base pair?

    A) HCO₃⁻ and H₃O⁺
    B) HCO₃⁻ and H₂O
    C) HCO₃⁻ and CO₃²⁻
    D) H₂O and CO₃²⁻
    C) HCO₃⁻ and CO₃²⁻

A conjugate pair differs by one proton: HCO₃⁻ donates H⁺ to become CO₃²⁻. The other conjugate pair is H₃O⁺ and H₂O; HCO₃⁻ and H₃O⁺ are both acids, not a conjugate pair.
