    C) しょうがお
    D) えかお
    A) えがお

笑顔 is read えがお, "a smiling face": いつも笑顔で迎えます = "always welcomes (them) with a smile." 笑顔 is one of the whole-word readings listed in the jōyō table's appendix (付表); its え comes from 笑む (えむ), and 顔 (かお) is voiced to がお.
    Feelings & Thinking

    A) くこう
    B) くうごう
    C) くうこう
    D) そらこう
    C) くうこう

    B) こつせつ
    C) こっせき
    D) こうせつ

    A) かしこい
    B) あさい
    C) くやしい
    D) おさない

くやしい (悔しい) is the frustration of losing or failing: 本当にくやしいよ = "it's really frustrating." Losing by just one point is the typical situation for it.

Which option best fills the blank?

    A) わけにはいきません
    B) わけではありません
    C) わけです
    D) わけがありません
    C) わけです

〜わけだ states the natural conclusion: それで、あんなに元気なわけですね = "so that's why they're so energetic." わけがない (there's no way) and わけではない (it's not that) would contradict それで.
    Judgement & Certainty
  6. 「先生のていねいな説明は、__ ★ __ __ ありがたかったです。」

Arrange the four options to complete the sentence. Which one goes in the ★ slot?

    A) にとって
    B) わたし

    D) 留学生の
    B) わたし

The order is 留学生の / わたし / にとって / とても: 留学生のわたしにとって、とてもありがたかった = "were very welcome to me as an international student." にとって gives the point of view and is followed by an evaluation.

About these cards

Review status: Second-reader reviewed, with corrections applied.

Checked against:

  • Kanji readings checked against the jōyō kanji table (Agency for Cultural Affairs, Japan, 2010) and KANJIDIC2 (EDRDG, CC BY-SA 4.0); vocabulary against JMdict (EDRDG, CC BY-SA 4.0); grammar against Tae Kim's Guide to Japanese Grammar (CC BY-NC-SA 3.0) and デジタル大辞泉 (Kotobank). Reference only; no text copied.
  • Kanji, vocabulary and grammar follow the sets commonly listed for JLPT N3 (no official list exists since 2010); every tested word is taught in this folder's study decks, though two target kanji (結, 骨) have no kanji card of their own and appear only inside words such as 結果 and 骨折.
