Which option best fills the blank?
Potential & Volitional
The potential form of よむ is よめる, and its object takes が: ちいさい じが よめません — I can't read the small print. よまれません is the passive and よませません the causative, and neither fits a sentence about my own ability. -
Which option best fills the blank?
Giving · Honorific & Humble
When someone gives something to me, the verb is くれる: あねが わたしに セーターを くれました — my older sister gave me a sweater. あげる gives outward from the speaker, and もらう would need me as the subject (あねに もらいました). -
Which option best fills the blank?
A) ひけて
Decisions & Obligation
Potential form + ように なる describes a gradual change in ability: ギターが ひける ように なりました — my older brother taught me, and I've become able to play the guitar a little. ように follows the dictionary-style form, not the て-form, volitional or past. -
How is the word in bold read?
Plans & Time
去年 is read きょねん — last year: the coat I bought last winter has already got too small. The vowel in きょ is short; きょう would be a different word, and さねん and こねん are not readings of 去年. -
How is the word in bold read?
A) うてん
Movement & Travel
運転 is read うんてん — driving: my father loves driving and often takes us to the seaside. 転 keeps its unvoiced reading てん in this word; うてん, うんでん and うんてい are not readings of 運転. -
Which option best fills the blank?
Adverbs
なかなか with a negative means not easily / just won't: バスが なかなか こない — the bus just wouldn't come, so I took a taxi. やっと (at last) goes with something that finally happens, not with a negative.
