The 10 sample cards as a list
  1. The flu left Dev so ______ that for three days he couldn't find the energy to climb the stairs, let alone finish his chemistry lab report.
    lethargic

Having no energy after an illness is the clue. Sedentary describes a way of life with lots of sitting, not a body drained by flu.
    Character & Behavior
  2. Without a flicker of fear, the ______ lifeguard plunged into the towering surf and swam straight for the child caught in the riptide.
    dauntless

Facing danger with no fear at all is dauntless. Indomitable needs some force trying to defeat a person, and stalwart praises loyalty over time, not courage in one moment.
    Character & Behavior
  3. Mr. Fenn never spoke out about it, yet he seemed to ______ bullying with his whole being, treating it as one of the worst wrongs a person could commit.
    abhor

Deep, private hatred of something morally wrong is abhor; "with his whole being" is the clue. Deplore means strongly disapproving of something, usually by criticizing it openly, and Mr. Fenn never spoke out.
    Feelings & Attitudes
  4. Only after an hour of protest did Kai give his sister a full, ______ apology, every word of it squeezed out through clenched teeth.
    grudging

Apologizing only after an hour of protest shows it was given unwillingly. A full apology isn't rudely short, so not curt, and contrite would need sincere regret, not clenched teeth.
    Feelings & Attitudes
  5. Ayo's speech was still too slurred for tomorrow's class presentation, but two hours after the dentist's numbing shot it was finally ______: his mom could at last make out that he wanted soup.
    intelligible

Once you can follow what someone is saying, their speech is intelligible: his mom can make out the words. Passable would mean good enough to be acceptable, and his speech isn't yet good enough for the presentation.
    Thinking & Knowing
  6. The radio station hired the announcer for her crisp ______: every word came out clearly, without a single swallowed syllable.
    diction

Clear pronunciation of each word is diction. Cadence is the rhythm and rise and fall of a voice, not how clearly each syllable is spoken.
    Speaking & Arguing
  7. Using a long bamboo pole, Felix tried for an hour to ______ the kite wedged between two high branches of the oak.
    dislodge

Forcing out something stuck fast is dislodge; "wedged" is the clue. Displace is moving something or someone aside, not prying loose what is jammed in place.
    Change & Growth
  8. The ballpark's ______ hot dog was nearly three feet long, and it took a whole row of friends to finish it.
    gargantuan

An enormous size is gargantuan. Capacious means roomy inside, and a three-foot hot dog isn't something you could fit things into.
    Size & Amount
  9. Tired of being outvoted on every issue, islanders held a ballot and agreed to ______ from the county and set up an independent town council.
    secede

Formally leaving a larger body to govern yourself is secede. Renounce gives up a right or belief, not membership in a county.
    Society & Power
  10. The beetle's ______ shell flashed green, then gold, then violet as Mila turned it slowly in the sunlight.
    iridescent

Colors that shimmer and shift as the angle changes are iridescent. Incandescent means glowing from heat; the shell only reflects light.
    Nature & Time
