The 10 sample cards as a list
  1. Ever ______ about how things work, Omar took apart the broken toaster just to see what was inside and how the pieces fit together.
    curious

The clue is that Omar takes the toaster apart just to find out what's inside. Eager goes with to or for, not about, and anxious would mean worried, which nothing here shows.
    Character & Behavior
  2. Jun wasn't angry, just a little ______, when he looked out the window and saw green grass instead of the snow day he had hoped for.
    disappointed

He feels let down because the morning didn't turn out the way he hoped. Frustrated needs annoyance, which "wasn't angry" rules out, and miserable is far too strong for "a little."
    Feelings & Attitudes
  3. When the song came on the radio, Lina couldn't remember its name, but she could ______ the tune from the first two notes: it was the one her dad always hums while cooking.
    recognize

Knowing a tune from before is to recognize it. Identify would also mean putting a name to it, and she can't remember the name; recall would mean pulling it up from memory, but the song is already playing.
    Thinking & Knowing
  4. The fans turned their backs on the field in silent ______ when the team announced that it would move to another city.
    protest

In protest means as a way of showing strong disagreement. Conflict is a fight or clash, and nobody turns away in conflict.
    Speaking & Arguing
  5. Every student is welcome to ______ in the clean-up day, whether they can come for one hour or stay the whole morning.
    participate

Joining in an event is to participate. Cooperate means each person doing their part in a team effort, or going along with a request, not simply joining an event.
    Actions & Effort
  6. The student council asked for ______ to the lunch rules: shorter lines, healthier snacks and the right to sit with friends from other classes.
    reforms

Changes that make a system better are reforms. Requests are the asking itself, so "asked for requests" says nothing.
    Change & Growth
  7. From the airplane window, the ______ ocean stretched in every direction, and we flew for hours without seeing any land.
    vast

Spreading over a huge area is vast. Extreme means much stronger or fiercer than normal, like scorching heat or bitter cold, not a huge open space.
    Size & Amount
  8. The museum's model ship has messy paint, and many museums own one just as big, but at six feet long it is still ______ enough to make visitors stop and admire it.
    impressive

Its large size wins admiration. The messy paint rules out superb and outstanding, which need high quality, and "many museums own one just as big" rules out remarkable and extraordinary, which need something unusual; exceptional can mean either, so it takes both clues to rule it out.
    Quality & Judgment
  9. By trading, marrying and conquering, the kings of one small city slowly brought dozens of lands under their rule, building a mighty ______.
    empire

Many lands under one ruler make an empire. A nation is a single country and its people, and an alliance is partners, not lands under one rule.
    Society & Power
  10. The newest painting in the art museum is a ______ showing snowy mountains, a frozen lake and a tiny cabin with smoke curling from its chimney.
    landscape

A painting whose subject is outdoor scenery is a landscape. Terrain is the land itself and what it's like underfoot; it can't hang on a museum wall.
    Nature & Time
