The 10 sample cards as a list
  1. Though Kofi is the best chess player in our school, he is ______ about it and never acts as if he is smarter than anyone else.
    humble

Not thinking he is better than others is the clue. Bashful means shy, and nothing says Kofi is shy; he simply doesn't act superior.
    Character & Behavior
  2. When her lost cat strolled through the door after three days, Mrs. Ito was so ______ that she laughed out loud and scooped him into her arms.
    delighted

Laughing out loud shows she is full of happiness. Grateful means feeling thankful, and her laughter shows joy rather than thanks.
    Feelings & Attitudes
  3. Before planting, each of us tried to ______ which seed would sprout first, and then we checked our guesses every morning.
    predict

Making guesses about the seeds before any of them came up is the clue. Determine would mean working out for certain which seed wins, but these are only guesses.
    Thinking & Knowing
  4. Lena had blamed the dog for the muddy carpet all week, but at dinner, without pausing and without anyone asking, she ______ and said she had tracked in the mud herself.
    confessed

Speaking up to take the blame for her own mess is to confess. Nobody asked her anything, so not cooperated; she didn't pause, so not hesitated; and admitted would need it or to it.
    Speaking & Arguing
  5. Each chore was quick and easy, yet Sam was amazed by how much he could ______ in one morning: he fed the dog, made his bed, swept the porch and took out the trash.
    accomplish

Finishing the tasks you set out to do is to accomplish them. Perform doesn't go with how much.

    Also right: achieve, manage
    Actions & Effort
  6. To ______ the sandcastle's walls against the waves, the kids packed the wet sand tightly and lined the bottom with flat stones.
    strengthen

Making the walls stronger is the clue. Restore would mean bringing back walls that had fallen, and these are being built up before the waves arrive.
    Change & Growth
  7. To find the total cost, multiply the price of one notebook by the ______ you are buying: five notebooks at two dollars each cost ten dollars.
    quantity

The number of notebooks you buy is the quantity. Volume is space or loudness, and ratio compares two amounts; the price is multiplied by how many you buy.
    Size & Amount
  8. Ms. Cole's gold star isn't for the best paper in the class; it's for ______ work, work far better than what that student usually turns in, which happens only a few times a year.
    exceptional

So good it stands out from the usual, and rare: both of the word's senses at once. "Isn't for the best paper" rules out none of the other praise words, since none of them needs the top paper in the class.

Also right: extraordinary, impressive, outstanding, remarkable, superb
    Quality & Judgment
  9. Through the long war, the small island nation stood by the larger country as its loyal ______, sending ships and supplies whenever it was asked.
    ally

A country that stands with another and gives aid is an ally. An alliance is the agreement between countries, not one of them.
    Society & Power
  10. Our science group measured the ______ of each yawn and found that most of them lasted about six seconds.
    duration

Six seconds from the start of a yawn to its end is that yawn's duration. An interval is the wait from one event to the next, not the length of one yawn.
    Nature & Time
