The 10 sample cards as a list
  1. Aunt Rosa knitted scarves for both twins. Max only pretended to like his, but Ella's thanks were ______, and she wore hers every day that winter.
    sincere

The contrast with pretending, and the proof of wearing it daily, show real feeling. Gracious means kind and polite, and even Max's pretend thanks could have been that.
    Character & Behavior
  2. Mr. Lund is cheerful in the hallway, but during tests he wears a ______ expression and frowns at the slightest whisper, so nobody dares to talk.
    stern

His frown shows strict disapproval of whispering. Gloomy would mean sad, and sadness wouldn't stop anyone from talking.
    Feelings & Attitudes
  3. The painted mural on the sidewalk creates the ______ of a deep hole, so people step around it even though the ground is perfectly flat.
    illusion

The ground is flat, but the painting makes people believe it drops away, so the hole is an illusion. A myth is an old story or a false belief many people share, not a trick on the eyes.
    Thinking & Knowing
  4. Leaders of the bus drivers met with the city to ______ a new contract, and the talks lasted until two in the morning.
    negotiate

Bargaining with the city over the terms of a new contract is negotiating. Compromise names the meet-in-the-middle deal that can come out of such talks, and it doesn't take "a contract" as its object.
    Speaking & Arguing
  5. After a year of learning to walk again on a broken leg, Mr. Abara called finishing the marathon his greatest ______.
    triumph

Coming out on top after a year of hard effort makes the finish a triumph. Mastery would mean great skill, but finishing at all, not skill, is his win.
    Actions & Effort
  6. Fungi and beetles help a fallen tree ______ slowly, until after many years it has turned into soft, dark soil that feeds new plants.
    decay

Wood slowly rotting into soil is decaying. Crumble is what stale bread or old stone does when it comes apart bit by bit, which doesn't explain the fungi or the new soil.
    Change & Growth
  7. Without a scale, the vet could only give an ______ weight for the puppy: somewhere around twelve pounds, give or take one.
    approximate

"Around twelve, give or take one" means the weight might be just a little off. Probable means likely, and it would take "a," not "an."
    Size & Amount
  8. Our town's poster promised a "Free Concert!," a ______ claim: tickets cost nothing, but parking cost forty dollars and you couldn't reach the show any other way.
    misleading

Every word on the poster was true, but it gave a false idea of the cost. Faulty would need an actual mistake, and the poster made none.
    Quality & Judgment
  9. At the ceremony, fifty new citizens raised their right hands together and recited an ______, swearing to stay faithful to their new homeland.
    oath

A promise spoken with great seriousness and ceremony in front of others is an oath, and "an" fits only it. Vow and pledge are close but would take "a."
    Society & Power
  10. Dark T-shirts ______ more sunlight than white ones, which is why they feel hotter on a bright summer afternoon.
    absorb

Soaking up the sun's warmth and light is absorbing it. White cloth sends more of the light back out, so it stays cooler.
    Nature & Time
