The 6 sample questions as a list
  1. When a passenger grumbled loudly that the boat tour was boring, the captain stayed ______, thanking him for being honest and kindly offering to refund his ticket.

    A) cowardly
    B) timid
    C) gracious
    D) stingy
    C) gracious

Staying kind and polite to a passenger who grumbled loudly, and generously offering him his money back, is being gracious. Timid is tempting because the captain does not argue back, but timid means easily scared and uneasy around people or new things, or holding back when boldness or courage is needed, and nothing here shows nerves or a lack of courage: the captain answers the complaint warmly, thanking the passenger for his honesty and kindly offering a refund.
    Character & Behavior
  2. Grandpa spread his old coins across the kitchen table and ______ them by the country that made them, giving France, Mexico and Japan each a velvet tray of its own.

    A) classified
    B) analyzed
    C) evaluated
    D) illustrated
    A) classified

Putting coins of the same kind together, here the ones from each country, is how Grandpa classified them. Analyzed is tempting because he looks over every coin, but analyzing means figuring something out or explaining it by looking carefully at each of its parts, and he is only sorting the coins into trays.
    Thinking & Knowing
  3. Ms. Okafor tried stickers, prizes and extra recess, but nothing could ______ Felix to practice his spelling words until he heard that the class winner would get to feed the classroom snake.

    A) enable
    B) caution
    C) petition
    D) motivate
    D) motivate

Making Felix want to practice is to motivate him, and the chance to feed the snake finally did it. Enable is tempting because it also fits "to practice," but enabling means making something possible, and Felix was always able to practice; he just didn't want to.
    Actions & Effort
  4. When Jada dipped a puff of cotton candy into her glass of water, it ______ almost at once: the fluffy sugar vanished from sight, and the water tasted faintly sweet.

    A) evaporated
    B) shriveled
    C) crumbled
    D) dissolved
    D) dissolved

Mixing into the water until it can no longer be seen, while the water turns sweet, is what the cotton candy did: it dissolved. Evaporated is tempting because the candy seems to vanish, but evaporating means a liquid turning into a gas, or a feeling, hope or chance disappearing, and this candy did not really disappear: its sugar is still there, in the sweet water.
    Change & Growth
  5. The wooden step stool in Grandma's kitchen looks plain, but it is ______: sixty years of kids climbing on it to reach the cookie jar haven't loosened a single leg.

    A) sturdy
    B) compact
    C) elegant
    D) towering
    A) sturdy

Staying strong and solid through sixty years of climbing kids makes the step stool sturdy. Elegant is tempting because "looks plain, but" hints at something better, but elegant means having a smooth, stylish grace in how something looks or moves, or being clever and simple, and the clue is strength: not one leg has come loose.
    Quality & Judgment
  6. For the swamp scene in our class play, a cold white ______ from the fog machine crept across the stage floor and curled around the actors' ankles.

    A) vapor
    B) particle
    C) speck
    D) fragment
    A) vapor

Mist floating along the floor is vapor. Particle is tempting because it names a tiny bit of something, but a particle is a single speck-sized bit, and one speck could not creep across a stage and curl around the actors' ankles like mist.
