The 10 sample cards as a list
  1. After the war ended, the former enemies slowly rebuilt ______ relations, exchanging ambassadors and reopening embassies in each other's capitals.
    diplomatic

Ambassadors and embassies point to dealings between countries. Civic is about a town and the duties of its citizens, not one nation's ties with another.
    Character & Behavior
  2. Unlike a chair or a rock, kindness is ______: you can't hold it, weigh it or take its picture, though you can see what it does.
    abstract

Something you can't hold, weigh or photograph is found only in the mind. Universal would mean shared by everyone, which the chair-and-rock contrast isn't about.
    Thinking & Knowing
  3. After the storm, we checked the rain ______ in the garden and found almost three inches of water in its little plastic tube.
    gauge

A tube that tells how much rain fell is a kind of meter. A probe explores or investigates; it doesn't show a level.
    Thinking & Knowing
  4. The real thief hid the stolen necklace in the gardener's toolbox to ______ him, hoping the police would never look any further.
    frame

Planting evidence pins the blame on someone innocent. Deceive would mean fooling the gardener himself, but it's the police who are fooled.
    Speaking & Arguing
  5. The zoo hopes to ______ a pair of red pandas from another zoo next spring, which would make it the first in the state to have them.
    acquire

Getting new animals from another zoo adds something valuable to what the zoo owns. Attain is for reaching a goal or level, not getting an animal.
    Actions & Effort
  6. Shuffling across the carpet in socks builds up ______ electricity, which is why touching a doorknob afterward can give you a small shock.
    static

Electricity that builds up on a surface and jumps as a shock is static. Stationary means staying in one place and doesn't name this kind of electricity.
    Change & Growth
  7. Every single culture that scientists have studied makes music of some kind, so the love of music seems truly ______.
    universal

"Every single culture" means shared by all people. Widespread would mean found in many places, not in every one.
    Size & Amount
  8. Since the bakery had started as a pie stand, giving away free slices of pie seemed a ______ way to celebrate its fiftieth birthday.
    fitting

Celebrating with pie suits a bakery that began as a pie stand. Apt means much the same, but it would need "an," not "a."
    Quality & Judgment
  9. Only twelve of the four hundred singers who tried out made the state's brand-new ______ choir, which takes only the very best voices.
    elite

A choir of the twelve best singers is among the very best. It is brand-new, so it can't yet be distinguished, famous for its work.
    Society & Power
  10. Grandma's doctor calls her back pain ______, since it has bothered her without a break for over ten years.
    chronic

A doctor's word for pain that has gone on for over ten years is chronic. Periodic pain comes and goes, and eternal means lasting forever.
    Nature & Time
