The 10 sample cards as a list
  1. Since she started volunteering at the shelter, Tess has grown ______, reminding friends at every lunch that she, unlike them, actually cares about others.
    self-righteous

She treats her good deeds as proof that she is morally better than her friends. Opinionated would need strong views pushed on others, not a show of goodness.
    Character & Behavior
  2. When her two best friends argued over whose science-fair idea was better, Leila refused to take a ______ either way, saying only that both projects sounded fun.
    stance

"Take a stance" in a disagreement means stating a position, which Leila avoids. Sentiment is a feeling, which you have rather than take.
    Feelings & Attitudes
  3. The airline turned Mr. Bose away at the gate because his passport had expired last month and was no longer ______ for travel.
    valid

An expired passport is no longer officially usable. Legitimate describes something lawful or fair, not a document's expiry date.
    Thinking & Knowing
  4. The shampoo commercial was all grand ______ about "a whole new you," but the bottle held the same ordinary soap as before.
    rhetoric

Impressive words meant to persuade, with little truth behind them. Jargon would be a field's special terms, and "a whole new you" is plain, showy language.
    Speaking & Arguing
  5. The council approved the new bike-lane plan in March, but crews will need all summer to fully ______ it, painting one street at a time.
    implement

An approved plan now has to move from idea to reality. Impose would mean forcing a rule on people, and undertake means taking on a task, not carrying it out.
    Actions & Effort
  6. Astronomers rate a star's brightness by its ______, and oddly, the lower the number, the brighter the star looks in the night sky.
    magnitude

The word names the number that rates how bright a star is, the same word used for how strong an earthquake is.
    Change & Growth
  7. The drama club spent three hundred dollars on costumes but raised only two hundred, leaving a ______ of one hundred dollars to cover before opening night.
    deficit

More money goes out than comes in, and the gap is the answer. Shortcoming is a weak point or flaw, not a sum of money.
    Size & Amount
  8. The museum chose one ordinary, well-used farmhouse kitchen as a ______ example of how most families in the valley cooked and ate in the 1890s.
    representative

An ordinary kitchen shows what was typical for most families. Exemplary would need "an," and its usual sense, so good others should copy it, clashes with "ordinary."
    Quality & Judgment
  9. The bakery on Elm Street is run as a ______: each of its nine workers owns an equal share and gets an equal vote on prices and hours.
    collective

A business where all the members are both the owners and the managers. A coalition brings separate groups together over a goal they share, often only for a while, rather than running a shop together.
    Society & Power
  10. The island's ______ includes forty kinds of fern and a rare orchid, but its only native animals are birds and insects.
    flora

Ferns and orchids are the island's plants. Fauna would be its animals, which the sentence lists separately.
    Nature & Time
