The 10 sample cards as a list
  1. Switching Pellam Toys to thicker wooden blocks was a ______: the sets felt sturdier in the hand, but each one cost forty cents more to make.
    trade-off

Gaining one thing (sturdier sets) by giving up some of another (forty cents a set) is a trade-off. A compromise is a deal between two sides; here one company simply chose.
    Strategy & Planning
  2. Before selling a single kayak, Ottery Outdoors raised ______ from a bank loan and the founders' savings to buy a boathouse and its first rental fleet.
    capital

Funding raised to launch a business, like this loan and these savings, is capital. Revenue comes from sales, and none had happened; equity means ownership, which a bank loan doesn't give.
    Finance & Accounting
  3. Tomas sells solar panels for Sollen Energy; he draws no salary, and his whole pay is a ______ worth six percent of each system's price once a homeowner signs.
    commission

Pay worked out as a cut of each sale's price is a commission. A premium pushes what a buyer pays past the usual price; here Tomas is the one being paid.
    Marketing & Sales
  4. Granwell's bottling line fills eight thousand jars of jam a day but could manage twelve thousand, so it has spare ______ for the new supermarket orders.
    capacity

The upper limit on what a line can turn out, minus what it makes now, is spare capacity. Output is the eight thousand it does make; bandwidth is a person's or team's free time.
    Operations & Supply
  5. Tamsworth Credit Union pays the same hourly wage as its rivals, but its ______, from dental coverage to a retirement plan and four weeks of paid vacation, draw applicants from across town.
    benefits

What an employer provides besides pay is benefits. Compensation includes the wage too and would take "draws"; the wage here is set aside as no better than rivals'.
    People & Management
  6. Brightline Buses must run twelve routes for four school years, and the district must pay it every month; both promises are written into the ______ the two sides finalized in June.
    contract

When both sides are legally bound to keep their promises, here routes and payment, the deal is a contract. A term sheet is mostly nonbinding, and a proposal is put forward for approval, not finalized by both sides.
    Deals & Negotiation
  7. Once the city dropped its fixed taxi fares, rides cost whatever drivers and passengers agreed on, turning the taxi trade into a ______ almost overnight.
    free market

When buyers and sellers settle prices between themselves, with no government fixing them, the result is a free market. Competition is rivalry for customers, and "a competition" would mean a contest.
    Economics & Markets
  8. The city charges Corvid Cycles' bike-share service a ______ of twenty dollars for every bike left blocking a sidewalk.
    penalty

The city is punishing the bike-share for every bike that blocks a sidewalk, so the twenty-dollar charge is a penalty. A premium lifts what someone pays above the going rate; it punishes no one.
    Law & Compliance
  9. Every second Thursday, each of Zubair's five engineers gets thirty minutes alone with him; in that private ______, they plan their own training rather than the project's next steps.
    one-on-one

A private meeting between a manager and one employee is a one-on-one. A performance review rates the employee's work; these talks are for the engineers' own training plans.
    Meetings & Communication
  10. The power company's smart meters send a reading from three million homes every fifteen minutes, so much ______ that ordinary spreadsheets crash opening a single day of it.
    big data

Data too large for ordinary tools, like billions of meter readings, is big data. Data analysis is the examining, not the pile of readings itself.
    Technology & Data
