The 10 sample cards as a list
  1. Torvane Robotics has nine hundred thousand dollars in the bank and loses seventy-five thousand a month after its small sales come in, so its ______ ends in about a year unless sales grow.
    runway

Cash on hand divided by the net cash burned each month, here about twelve months, is runway. Capital is the money itself, not how long it will last.
    Strategy & Planning
  2. At Marlow Couriers, the analyst stressed that her ______ was not a prediction, only arithmetic: if fuel stays at today's price, delivery costs rise eleven percent by summer.
    projection

Figures worked out from a set assumption ("if fuel stays") form a projection. A forecast predicts the likeliest outcome, which she says this is not.
    Strategy & Planning
  3. Tallis Pottery's ______ is the same whether it fires one mug or a thousand: the studio's rent, its insurance and the office manager's salary.
    overhead

Costs that keep the whole studio running rather than going into any one mug, like rent and office salaries, are overhead. Operating expenses also include the clay and glaze, which grow with every mug fired, and a budget is a spending plan, not a list of indirect costs.
    Finance & Accounting
  4. When one of the two partners in Quenby Optometry retired, an accountant's ______ put the practice at nine hundred thousand dollars, so the other partner paid her four hundred fifty thousand for her half.
    valuation

An estimate of what a business is worth, here worked out before a sale, is a valuation. Market value is the price the market would set on something right now, or a public company's shares totaled at today's price, not one accountant's estimate.
    Finance & Accounting
  5. The sofa cost eleven hundred dollars at the North Carolina factory, plus two hundred more in ______ to truck it across the country to Denver.
    freight

What it costs to have goods hauled, here two hundred dollars to truck a sofa to Denver, is freight. A shipment is the batch of goods itself, and nobody pays "two hundred more in shipment."
    Operations & Supply
  6. At Fennimore Design, staff eat lunch together, juniors openly challenge the founders, and nobody emails after six; new hires say that ______ is why they stay.
    workplace culture

Shared habits and values, like open debate and no late emails, make up workplace culture. Morale is whether a team is feeling upbeat or low these days, not the habits that shape how they work together.
    People & Management
  7. Rather than accept the first quote, Juniper Yoga's owners plan to ______ with the mat supplier, offering a two-year order if it cuts the price by a tenth.
    bargain

Negotiating terms, a longer order traded for a lower price, is bargaining. Advocate means arguing for a cause; it doesn't involve offering something in exchange.
    Deals & Negotiation
  8. Fernhill Farm sells most of its eggs ______, a thousand dozen at a time to a distributor that supplies forty corner stores, keeping only a few for its roadside stand.
    wholesale

Selling a business its stock in bulk, here the distributor serving forty stores, is selling wholesale. Retail is the roadside stand, where passing drivers buy the few eggs the farm holds back.
    Economics & Markets
  9. Rinaldi Jewelers' safe logs every opening, whose code unlocked it and what was taken out, so the insurer can follow the ______ for any missing ring.
    audit trail

A step-by-step record of who did what and when is an audit trail. A backup is a copy of data kept in case of loss, not a log of each opening.
    Law & Compliance
  10. Before email, the export firm's ______ with its buyers in Lisbon took weeks, as each letter crossed the Atlantic by ship and each reply came back the same way.
    correspondence

Mail that passes between organizations, here letters crossing the ocean by ship, is correspondence. A memo stays inside one organization, and these letters went between a firm and its buyers abroad.
    Meetings & Communication
