The 6 sample questions as a list
  1. Her race won, the champion swimmer floated in the cool-down pool, her arms moving in slow, ______ strokes, as if she had the whole afternoon to spare.

    A) sclerotic
    B) languid
    C) restive
    D) doughty
    B) languid

Slow strokes made as if there were all the time in the world are relaxed and unhurried: languid. Sclerotic is tempting because it suggests slowness, but it means stiff and set in its ways or, in the body, abnormally hardened, said of institutions or arteries, not an easy swim.
    Character & Behavior
  2. The consultants were paid a fortune to inform the company that happy customers come back, a flat ______ that no one would bother to quote and any shop clerk could have offered free.

    A) aphorism
    B) non sequitur
    C) truism
    D) misapprehension
    C) truism

A point so obvious that any clerk could make it is a truism. Aphorism is tempting, but an aphorism is a memorable saying worth quoting, and this one is too flat for anyone to repeat.
    Thinking & Knowing
  3. On top of the usual salary, the remote valley town offered young doctors a rent-free house if they stayed five years, and that ______ finally persuaded two of them to open a clinic there.

    A) inducement
    B) largesse
    C) wherewithal
    D) patronage
    A) inducement

A free house offered to persuade doctors to come is an inducement. Largesse is tempting because the house is generous, but largesse is free giving by the wealthy or powerful, and this house came with a condition: five years of service.
    Actions & Effort
  4. Early mapmakers learned that a river's course is ______: one spring flood can carve a new channel and leave last year's riverbank a mile from the water.

    A) sclerotic
    B) episodic
    C) mutable
    D) incipient
    C) mutable

A course that one flood can redraw is likely to change: mutable. Episodic is tempting, but it means happening now and then, which describes the floods, not the course; sclerotic, stiff and too set in its ways to change, is the opposite.
    Change & Growth
  5. The pop song's lyrics are ______: for three minutes the singer repeats "go, go, now, yeah" and never says a word about anyone or anything.

    A) vacuous
    B) saccharine
    C) acerbic
    D) discursive
    A) vacuous

Lyrics that never say anything about anyone are empty of meaning: vacuous. Saccharine is tempting for a pop song, but saccharine means falsely sweet or sentimental, and "go, go, now, yeah" holds no sentiment at all.
    Quality & Judgment
  6. The island's ______ winter, with gales that tore off roofs and waves that flooded the harbor road, kept the ferry tied up for weeks.

    A) equable
    B) vernal
    C) fractious
    D) tempestuous
    D) tempestuous

Gales that tear off roofs and waves that flood the road make a very stormy winter: tempestuous. Equable is tempting as a climate word, but an equable climate is steady and mild, the opposite of this one.
    Nature & Time
