The 10 sample cards as a list
  1. Deeply devoted to her faith, the ______ grandmother lit a candle at the shrine each dawn and spent every evening in quiet prayer.
    pious

Devotion and prayer point to deep religious feeling. Orthodox means following accepted teachings, not personal devotion, and virtuous is about goodness, not worship.
    Character & Behavior
  2. The teacher grades only the final answers, yet Priya is so ______ that she double-checks every step and labels each graph neatly anyway.
    conscientious

She does careful, thorough work beyond what is required. Dutiful means meeting the demands others set for you, and Priya goes past that.
    Character & Behavior
  3. The new manager was ______ to the staff's suggestions, writing down every idea and trying several of them within a week.
    receptive

Listening to ideas and trying them out shows a willingness to consider them; you are receptive to a suggestion.
    Feelings & Attitudes
  4. However often Uncle Desmond explained the rules of cricket, Diego still could not ______ how a single match could last five whole days.
    fathom

"Could not ... how" after repeated explanations means he could not understand it: fathom. Unravel means working out something tangled yourself, and Diego has already been told the rules.
    Thinking & Knowing
  5. Instead of overturning the earlier verdict, the appeals court chose to ______ it, so the original ruling still stands.
    affirm

In court, the opposite of overturning a decision is to affirm it. Reinstate would mean restoring a ruling that had already been thrown out.
    Speaking & Arguing
  6. From a safe distance, the ranger used a long pole to ______ the motionless alligator, checking whether it was asleep or sick.
    prod

The ranger pokes the alligator with the end of the pole to see how it reacts, which is prod. Spur means to urge someone on, not to poke something to test it.
    Actions & Effort
  7. Sunlight and waves slowly ______ a floating plastic bottle until it breaks into tiny pieces that fish mistake for food.
    degrade

Breaking a material down chemically is degrade. Mar spoils how good something looks or is without breaking it down, and degenerate usually takes no object.
    Change & Growth
  8. Our new puppy brought a whole ______ of problems: chewed shoes, muddy paw prints and three broken flowerpots in the first week.
    slew

"A whole slew of" introduces a large number, and the list proves it. A pittance is an amount so small it hardly counts, the opposite.
    Size & Amount
  9. Spray-painting graffiti across the brand-new library mural was ______ behavior, and the principal suspended the students who did it.
    deplorable

Conduct so bad that it shocks people and earns the tough punishment it got is deplorable. Abysmal is for very poor quality or performance, and callous would need cruelty toward someone's pain.
    Quality & Judgment
  10. Health workers hope to ______ polio completely, so that not a single case remains anywhere in the world.
    eradicate

Wiping something out so fully that not one trace of it remains is eradicate. Suppress would only keep it down, not remove every case.
    Nature & Time
