The 10 sample cards as a list
  1. Tomás is so ______ about his model trains that he once skipped his own birthday party to finish painting a tiny station.
    fanatical

Skipping your own party for a hobby goes past reason. Ardent is warm, admirable enthusiasm, not devotion that has become unreasonable.
    Character & Behavior
  2. Ms. Adeyemi is no saint, since she is often late and forgetful, but she is deeply ______: no payment could make her break her rules for honest reporting.
    principled

She lives by firm rules that money can't bend. "No saint" rules out virtuous, which praises a person's overall goodness, and "late and forgetful" rules out conscientious.
    Character & Behavior
  3. Inside, Jamal was an ______ boy when his story won first prize, but he hid his joy so completely that his teammates saw no celebrating at all, only his usual calm face.
    elated

He feels great joy but shows none. "An" rules out jubilant, and exuberant is joy that spills over for all to see, which "no celebrating" rules out.
    Feelings & Attitudes
  4. Priya's asthma is mild most days, but running laps in freezing air can ______ it, turning a light wheeze into a serious attack, so the coach lets Priya walk instead.
    aggravate

Stirring up an illness so that it gets worse is aggravate. Compound piles a second trouble on top of the first, and heighten is for feelings and effects, not illnesses.
    Feelings & Attitudes
  5. In its ads, the new gym tried to ______ how far it was from downtown, calling the forty-minute drive "just a quick hop."
    downplay

Calling a forty-minute drive a quick hop treats it as a smaller problem than it is: downplay. Belittle puts down a person or their work, and trivialize is for something serious.
    Speaking & Arguing
  6. Each time the raccoons found a new way into the trash bins, Mr. Abbott found a new trick to ______ them, from bungee cords to heavy rocks.
    thwart

Blocking someone so that what they planned never happens is thwart. Jeopardize only puts something at risk; Mr. Abbott stops the raccoons outright.
    Actions & Effort
  7. After drinking most of their water on the trail, the hikers stopped at a mountain spring to ______ their bottles before the long climb.
    replenish

Topping something back up after it has run low or run out is replenish. Refurbish means to repair and redecorate, which empty bottles don't need.
    Change & Growth
  8. Years of being told she had no talent left Sara's confidence ______, and only in college did it finally begin to grow.
    stunted

"Only in college did it begin to grow" means it had been kept from growing. Diminutive means very small, not held back.
    Size & Amount
  9. Usually lively, the band gave a ______ show last night: the singer mumbled, the drummer looked half asleep, and nobody danced.
    lackluster

The contrast with "usually lively" points to a show with no energy. Abysmal would mean extremely bad, while the clues describe dullness.
    Quality & Judgment
  10. Two greedy ministers met in secret to ______ against the queen, plotting to seize her throne while she was abroad.
    conspire

Secretly planning harm together is conspire. Mutiny is an open revolt, usually by sailors or soldiers, not a quiet plot by ministers.
    Society & Power
