The 6 sample questions as a list
  1. The two sportscasters on the morning radio show argue about nearly every game, yet off the air ______ wins out: they say good morning and hold the studio door when the other is carrying coffee.

    A) reverence
    B) civility
    C) distaste
    D) dissent
    B) civility

Polite, respectful behavior toward someone you disagree with is civility. Reverence is tempting because the sportscasters show respect, but reverence means respect and admiration so deep that it often comes with a sense of awe, far more than a good morning between partners who argue about nearly every game.
    Character & Behavior
  2. Whenever the three retired mail carriers meet for breakfast at the corner diner, they happily ______ for hours about the dogs that used to chase them and the snowy winter when they delivered letters on skis.

    A) brood
    B) gloat
    C) waver
    D) reminisce
    D) reminisce

Happily talking about shared times from long ago is to reminisce. Brood is tempting because it also means thinking about something for a long time, but brooding is unhappy, and these old friends are enjoying their memories.
    Thinking & Knowing
  3. Determined to see every streak of the meteor shower, Imani fought off sleep in her lawn chair for hours, but by 2 a.m. she had ______, and she dozed until the sky began to turn pink.

    A) brooded
    B) cowered
    C) regressed
    D) succumbed
    D) succumbed

After fighting sleep for hours, she gave way to something she could no longer hold out against: she had succumbed. Regressed is tempting because she went from awake to asleep, but to regress is to lose ground already gained and become worse or more childish again, and nothing in the sentence shows progress she lost; she simply stopped resisting sleep.
    Actions & Effort
  4. At the raptor center, volunteers ______ injured owls and hawks, nursing their broken wings and exercising the birds until they can fly and hunt again before releasing them into the wild.

    A) refurbish
    B) reinstate
    C) replenish
    D) rehabilitate
    D) rehabilitate

Helping injured animals recover their health and skills ("until they can fly and hunt again") is to rehabilitate them. Refurbish is tempting because it also means restoring, but to refurbish is to give an object a good cleaning and repair until it is as good as new, not to nurse a living bird back to health.
    Change & Growth
  5. Checking the school basement with a carbon monoxide meter took the firefighter one minute and gave her no trouble, but the question it answered was ______: whether six hundred students could safely stay in the building.

    A) taxing
    B) mundane
    C) weighty
    D) superficial
    C) weighty

A question about whether six hundred students can safely stay in the building is serious and important: weighty. Taxing is tempting because the sentence contrasts the question with the easy check, but taxing means making heavy demands on your effort and energy, and the check answered that very question in one minute with no trouble.
    Quality & Judgment
  6. Though she tried hard to sound calm, a faint ______ crept into Hana's voice and gave away how worried she was as she phoned the vet to ask how her cat's surgery had gone.

    A) composure
    B) tremor
    C) civility
    D) connotation
    B) tremor

A quiver that creeps into the voice against her will, betraying her worry, is a tremor. Composure is tempting because Hana was trying to stay calm, but composure means keeping a cool head and steady nerves, the opposite of what gave her worry away.
