The 6 sample questions as a list
  1. Townspeople described the old ferryman as truly ______: in forty years he never overcharged a passenger, never told a lie and always shared his catch with families in need.

    A) virtuous
    B) pious
    C) shrewd
    D) brazen
    A) virtuous

Honest prices, no lies and generosity add up to high moral standards: virtuous. Pious is tempting, but it means devoted to religion, and the sentence says nothing about faith or worship.
    Character & Behavior
  2. When the beloved oak in the schoolyard had to be cut down, students gathered to ______ its loss, sharing sad stories about the shade and the rope swing it once held.

    A) brood
    B) reminisce
    C) gloat
    D) lament
    D) lament

Gathering to share "sad stories" about a loss is expressing grief: lament. Reminisce is tempting because they recall the past, but reminiscing is pleasant remembering, and it needs "about": no one reminisces a loss.
    Feelings & Attitudes
  3. The new club president threw herself into the recycling project with boundless ______, working through lunch, recruiting forty volunteers and painting bins for every hallway within a month.

    A) conviction
    B) zeal
    C) composure
    D) drudgery
    B) zeal

Working through lunch and doing so much so fast show a burning eagerness: zeal. Conviction is tempting because she clearly believes in recycling, but conviction is a firm belief, not the burst of energy described.
    Actions & Effort
  4. The summer workshop pairs ______ filmmakers, most of them teenagers who have shot only a few short videos on their phones, with professional editors and camera operators.

    A) distinctive
    B) budding
    C) prestigious
    D) stunted
    B) budding

Teenagers with only a few videos are just beginning and show promise: budding. Stunted is tempting because these filmmakers are not yet fully developed, but stunted describes growth that something has held back, and nothing in the sentence is holding these beginners back: they have simply just started.
    Change & Growth
  5. The hospital's new children's wing was paid for entirely through ______, as hundreds of local families and businesses donated money to help sick kids get care close to home.

    A) vocation
    B) philanthropy
    C) alchemy
    D) aristocracy
    B) philanthropy

Donating money to help others is philanthropy. Vocation is tempting because helping sick children sounds like a calling, but a vocation is the career someone feels born to do, and these donors were giving money, not working there.
    Society & Power
  6. Gardeners noticed brown spots spreading across the tomato leaves and feared a ______ that could wither every plant in the community garden within a few weeks.

    A) influx
    B) stigma
    C) blight
    D) tremor
    C) blight

A spreading disease that withers plants is a blight. Stigma is tempting because it is also a plant word, the flower part that catches pollen, but it is not a disease.
    Nature & Time
