The 10 sample cards as a list
  1. The movers were oddly ______ about Mrs. Park's antique china: they heard every one of her warnings, then tossed the boxes into the truck anyway with a shrug, as if her grandmother's plates were paper cups.
    cavalier

Hearing her worry and brushing it off with a shrug is an offhand lack of concern for something that matters to her. Heedless would take "of" here; slipshod describes careless work, not an attitude toward someone's feelings.

    Also right: blasé, flippant
    Character & Behavior
  2. The old professor seemed to ______ any question he considered beneath him: he did answer it, but with a weary sigh and a glance at the clock.
    disdain

Looking down on a question as beneath you is to disdain it. Spurn means to reject something with scorn, but he does answer; he simply makes his scorn plain.
    Feelings & Attitudes
  3. Only the head baker and her sister were ______ to the secret recipe behind the shop's famous cinnamon rolls.
    privy

Being let in on a secret is being privy to it. Cognizant means aware, but it takes "of" and says nothing about being trusted with a secret.
    Thinking & Knowing
  4. When the city council asked why the bridge repairs were three years late, the construction company chose to ______, skipping every hearing and leaving every letter unanswered.
    stonewall

Meeting questions with evasion or a flat refusal to answer or help is to stonewall. Stymie means to block someone's progress and needs an object; here the company blocks by staying silent.
    Speaking & Arguing
  5. Trailing by one run in the ninth, the coach tried a daring ______, sending his fastest runner to steal home on the very first pitch.
    gambit

A risky move made to gain an advantage is a gambit. Bravado is a show of boldness, but the coach's move is a real tactic, not a display.
    Actions & Effort
  6. The summer she spent volunteering at an animal hospital proved ______: it is the reason she became a vet twenty years later.
    formative

An experience that shapes how someone develops is formative. Embryonic means at an early stage, but the summer is not unfinished; it shaped her later life.
    Change & Growth
  7. Instruments buried deep under the volcano recorded ______ activity for weeks before it finally erupted.
    seismic

Shaking of the ground is seismic activity. Monolithic means large and uniform, and nothing here describes the volcano's shape.
    Size & Amount
  8. "How was your weekend?" seemed an ______ question, but it brought Tia to tears because her dog had run away on Saturday.
    innocuous

Harmless and unlikely to upset is innocuous. Humdrum means dull, but the point is that the question seemed harmless, not boring.
    Quality & Judgment
  9. Because the shoplifting charge was minor, the case went before a local ______ rather than a full court with a jury.
    magistrate

A judge who hears minor cases is a magistrate. An arbiter settles disputes, not criminal charges.
    Society & Power
  10. After forty years, the members voted for the ______ of the stamp club, and its few remaining albums went to the school library.
    dissolution

The official ending of an organization is its dissolution. Finality is the quality of being final, not the act of ending a club.
    Nature & Time
