However often her little brothers teased her about her bright orange rain boots, Mei wore them proudly to school, apparently ______ to every joke they made.
A) impervious
B) antagonistic
C) privy
D) subservientA) imperviousCharacter & Behavior
The jokes have no effect on her: she is impervious to them. Antagonistic is tempting because she shrugs off the teasing, but it means showing active hostility, and Mei simply ignores the jokes; privy to means let in on a secret, and subservient to means too willing to obey. -
A car that runs on nothing but water sounds wonderful, but such a machine is a ______ that the laws of physics will never allow.
A) preconception
B) verity
C) touchstone
D) chimeraD) chimeraThinking & Knowing
An idea that exists only as fantasy, with no real chance of happening, is a chimera. Preconception is tempting because it is also an idea, but it is an opinion formed too early, not an impossible thing people chase; a verity is a truth. -
The magician's hands were so ______ that the audience never saw the coin slip from his palm into the volunteer's pocket, even when he repeated the trick slowly.
A) canny
B) ponderous
C) slipshod
D) deftD) deftActions & Effort
Hands quick and skillful enough to hide the move are deft. Canny is tempting because it means clever, but it describes shrewd judgment in business or practical matters, not skillful hands; ponderous and slipshod mean clumsy and careless. -
The gardeners at the community plot agreed to leave the north beds ______ this summer, turning the soil but planting nothing so that the worn-out ground could regain its strength.
A) pastoral
B) sylvan
C) fallow
D) torridC) fallowChange & Growth
Turned soil that rests for a season with nothing sown in it, so it can recover, is fallow. Pastoral is tempting because it suggests farmland, but it describes the peaceful, simple feel of country life, not soil left to rest; sylvan means wooded. -
The judge told the jury to ignore the lawyer's ______ remarks about the tenant's taste in music, which had nothing to do with whether he had paid his rent.
A) extraneous
B) admissible
C) incisive
D) unimpeachableA) extraneousQuality & Judgment
Remarks that have "nothing to do with" the question are not relevant: extraneous. Admissible is tempting because of the courtroom, but admissible remarks are ones the jury may consider, and the judge told it to ignore these. -
The new principal hoped to ______ the tired old building with fresh life, so she covered its gray hallways with student murals and filled every window with plants.
A) infuse
B) galvanize
C) encumber
D) taintA) infuseNature & Time
Filling the building with a new quality, fresh life, is to infuse it. Galvanize is tempting because the principal wants energy, but to galvanize is to shock people into action or to coat steel with zinc, not to fill a place with a quality; encumber means to weigh down, and taint means to spoil.
